Don't Deal Away Our Health
The Coalition of National Health Education Organizations (CNHEO) releases series of budget impact stories

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 30, 2012

WASHINGTON - The Coalition of National Health Education Organizations (CNHEO) is pleased to announce the availability of a series of budget impact stories entitled-- Don't Deal Away Our Health! In response to the current debates over appropriations and federal budget deficit reduction proposals, the featured stories describe the impact on states and local communities if public health program budgets are reduced, or eliminated altogether.

"These stories represent various programs from across the country and will be a useful resource in discussions with legislators and decision makers, stakeholders, and local partners" says CNHEO Coordinator Mark Temple, PhD, FASHA. These budget impact stories can be found on the CNHEO website at: http://www.cnheo.org/

Many public health programs are being eliminated or forced to do more with fewer resources in communities across the country. A study conducted by the National Association of County and City Health Officials found that 57 percent of local health departments reduced or eliminated services in at least one program area in 2011, cuts that affected 65 percent of the U.S. population. The cuts proposed in current federal budget discussions further threaten the vitality of our public health system.

Public health promotes evidence-based prevention strategies that are vital to improving health outcomes in the U.S. These programs, in conjunction with affordable, high quality health care coverage and delivery, will lead to significant improvements in our nation's health.

The CNHEO will use these stories during the 2013 Health Education Advocacy Summit (http://www.sophe.org/advocacysummit.cfm). March 2-4, 2013 CNHEO represents over 30,000 health education professionals of the following organizations:

American Association for Health Education

American College Health Association

American Public Health Association/Public Health Education & Health Promotion Section

American Public Health Association/School Health Education & Services Section

American School Health Association
