Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Award

Deadline: July 31st of each calendar year

Purpose:

To provide support to both undergraduate and graduate level full time students in their pursuit of a degree in health education. Each year two awards, in the amount of $1,500.00 each, will be given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to addressing the public’s health through a career in health education, academic excellence, and financial need.

Eligibility Criteria and Requirements:

  1. Current enrollment as a full time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution of higher education pursing a health education degree; must have completed one-third of coursework required for major.
  2. National SOPHE Membership (visit http://www.sophe.org to join).

  3. An official (sealed) transcript (including course titles) that:
    • clearly shows a major in health education, e.g., Health Education,
    • Community Health Education, Public Health Education, School Health Education, etc OR
    • an official transcript and a copy of the ‘program of study requirements’ for your degree that reflects course work with specific preparation addressing the seven areas of responsibility in the FRAMEWORK used by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (http://www.nchec.org).

  4. A letter of recommendation from an academic advisor verifying: a) the nominee’s commitment to the pursuit of a degree in health education; b) the number of credits required toward a major in health education; c) the number of credits the student nominee has completed towards their health education degree.

  5. Written statement (not more than two pages, double-spaced, at least 10 pt. Font) addressing issues impacting the future of health education and the nominee’s perceived roles or desires for contributing to the resolution of these issues.

  6. Resume

  7. Demonstrated financial need as verified by the completion of the “SOPHE Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Demonstrated Financial Need Form”. The form should be completed and signed by either the department chair or financial aid office and either stamped with department/ institution seal or attached to official institution letterhead and mailed to the National SOPHE office.

Note: Awards are recommended by the SOPHE Awards Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees.

**Nominations and support letters are due in the SOPHE National Office by July 31st of each calendar year**
