Who Is Eligible to Apply for SABPAC Approval?

Any department or program preparing undergraduate health educators that:

  1. Is an integral part of a college or university accredited by affiliates of the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation;
  2. Does not discriminate in any regard to age, race, sex, race, religion or national origin;
  3. Offers a baccalaureate degree with a major/option in health education, including practice teaching and/or field experience with a minimum of 320 experiential hours supervised by a professional trained health educator;
  4. Will conduct a self-study consistent with the "Manual on Baccalaureate Health Education Program Approval: Criteria and Guidelines for Self-Study".

Cost of Approval

Application Fee: $1000 (covers first five years as Approved Program; no annual fee to pay.)Site Visit Team Expenses: $2,000 to $2,500 (Depends upon travel fares, local lodging and meals). Re-approval Fee: $1500 (Covers second five-year period as Approved Program; no annual fee.) Preparing for Approval/Program Self-Study Institutions seeking approval must agree to conduct a self-study following the procedures outlined in the "Manual on Baccalaureate Health Education Program Approval: Criteria and Guidelines for Self-Study". An inherent component of the self-study process is documentation that the program assures graduates of being able to demonstrate competencies for entry-level health educators. The competencies are described in the document "A Framework for the Development of Competency-Based Curricula for Entry Level Health Educators," from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

The Site Visit Review Team

The Site Visit Review Team is composed of volunteer professional who serve without honoraria. They are selected for their competency, knowledge, experience and training in health education. Members include one practitioner, a faculty member from a baccalaureate health education program and one person with expertise in undergraduate health education curriculum development. Each member of the Team is a member of SOPHE or AAHE. At least two members are Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES). The Team review lasts 2-3 days.
