SOPHE is an independent, international, professional association made up of a diverse membership of health education professionals and students. The society promotes healthy behaviors, healthy communities, and healthy environments through its membership, its network of local chapters, and its numerous partnerships with other organizations. With its primary focus on public health education, SOPHE provides leadership through a code of ethics, standard for professional preparation, research, and practice; professional development; and public outreach. SOPHE's national and chapter membership includes over 4000 public health professionals that work in a variety of disciplines and settings, many of which can be linked to environmental health promotion.
SOPHE receives support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Marketing, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) in the form of a cooperative agreement that allows us to build capacity to conduct environmental health education activities with the ultimate goal of increasing environmental health literacy. Through this cooperative agreement, SOPHE is able to raise awareness of environmental health issues among health educators, develop a variety of resources, and provide continuing education opportunities that focus on a variety of environmental health issues.
Approximately one hundred SOPHE members currently participate in the newly established Environmental Health Promotion Special Interest Group (EHP SIG). This group was developed in order to improve communication and collaboration among SOPHE members who are involved in environmental health education, programming, services, and research. Members of the EHP SIG receive SOPHE's monthly Environmental Health Promotion News U Can Use e-newsletter, as well as other updates and information regarding environmental health related alerts, news, events, and opportunities. Members are also able to participate in special environmental health promotion roundtable networking events that are held during SOPHE's Mid-Year and Annual Meetings.
