The choices we make as humans and consumers can have profound effects on our natural resources and the state of our environment, as well as our health. However, with the right knowledge, we can take action as individuals or as part of a larger community, to preserve our environment and sustain its natural resources for future generations, while also protecting public health.
The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) has long recognized the important link between our natural environment and public health. In 2004, SOPHE adopted a resolution for "Improving the Public's Health through Environmental Health Education and Health Promotion." SOPHE continues to aim to increase environmental health literacy among health educators, as well as the general public.
The SOPHE Environmental Health Promotion website was designed to raise awareness of the connection between behavioral sciences, health education, health promotion, and our surrounding environment. It is our hope that this site will provide you with the information you need to gain a better understanding of a variety of environmental health issues facing today's society, as well as actions you can take as health educators to begin increasing environmental health literacy within your local communities.
