Support for School Health
The Link Between Health and Academic Success
Making
the Connection: Health and Student Achievement: Healthy
children learn better!
This power point presentation was created by the Society
of State Directors of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
(the Society) and the Association of State and Territorial
Health Officials (ASTHO). It provides an excellent overview
of the research linking health status and behavior with
academic achievement. It makes a strong case for justifying
each of the components of a coordinated school health program
and promoting the health and educational outcomes for young
people. This presentation is copyrighted; but can be copied
it in whole or in part as long as the Society and ASTHO
are cited as authors.
School
Health Starter Kit
The School Health Starter Kit was developed by the Council
of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the Association
of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) with support
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Division
of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH). It is designed
for use by chief state school officers, state health officials,
and their staff to help build support in communities and
schools for coordinated school health. To meet these objectives
the kit contains easy-to-use, research-based tools and materials
to educate and motivate the public regarding school health
issues. The kit includes: a booklet for policy makers and
opinion leaders; posters and ad slicks’ various resources
to increase community awareness about the importance of
school health; a CD-ROM containing all the materials, graphics
files; and text that were used to create the kit, for states
to use.
