SOPHE RESPONSE TO HURRICANE KATRINA

National SOPHE extends its heartfelt sympathies to our members and their families of the Delta SOPHE chapter and others in the gulf coast areas affected by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The devastation, flooding, displacement, and loss of precious lives are incomprehensible. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

As an immediate response, National SOPHE has donated $500 to the American Red Cross, and encourages all of its members to contribute to any of the charities identified at the FEMA website:

http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18473.

After consulting Delta SOPHE, we will notify you of additional financial or non-financial assistance that is needed.

At this time, we are in very close contact with APHA and are still awaiting formal reports of the impact of Katrina on the Intercontinental Hotel, site of our 56th Annual Meeting, November 3-5. The hotel is scheduled to re-open in mid-September and continues to accept reservations for our meeting through its central registration number (800-445-6563). SOPHE also is continuing to accept all meeting registrations by mail and fax.  WE WILL ALERT ALL MEMBERS, PRESENTERS, AND SUPPORTERS ABOUT ANY CHANGES TO THE CURRENT SOPHE 2005 ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULE, LOCATION, AND REGISTRATION DEADLINE NO LATER THAN 9/8/06.

We appreciate your patience under these difficult circumstances.
Please stay tuned to the SOPHE website for further updates (www.sophe.org).

Sincerely,
Elaine Auld, MPH, CHES
Executive Director
