At the Intersection of Tobacco & Food: Creating Healthy Retail Environments at WIC/SNAP Retailers and Beyond

Lower-income families in the U.S. are at increased risk for food insecurity and have higher rates of tobacco use. Many retailers accepting government food assistance benefits also sell tobacco products, whose marketing promotes smoking initiation and undermines quit attempts.
This webinar showcases findings from a new, national study examining tobacco marketing at retailers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and/or Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs across the U.S.
Particularly relevant to public health practitioners and health policy professionals, the speakers will discuss approaches for creating healthier retail environments across the federal, state, and local levels.
Among the potential solutions that will be discussed include tobacco retailer licensing, healthy retailer licensing, Farm Bill provisions for the SNAP program, and healthy retailer campaigns at WIC/SNAP stores.
