Washington, D.C. – September 20, 2017 – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) announces the appointment of Kathleen Roe, DrPH, MPH, as the next editor-in-chief of SOPHE’s journal Health Promotion Practice (HPP). She will begin the transition as editor this fall and will lead the bimonthly journal’s 18th volume beginning January 2018.
Dr. Roe has been a professor of public health and community health education at San Jose State University for 29 years, where she served as chair for the Health Science and Recreation Department from 2001-2013. She brings more than two decades of scholarship and editorial experience, including as founding associate editor for HPP’s “Circle of Research and Practice” Department; co-editor of HPP’s first supplement devoted to health disparities in 2002; and editorial board member of SOPHE’s Pedagogy in Health Promotion journal.
As SOPHE President in 1999-2000, Dr. Roe led efforts to expand SOPHE’s diversity in membership and leadership. Throughout her career she has been deeply engaged in translational research and community interventions both nationally and internationally.
“Dr. Roe’s breadth and depth of health education scholarship, leadership, and sustained community engagement makes her perfectly suited as the next editor-in-chief of Health Promotion Practice,” says Adenike Bitto, MD, DrPH, MPH, MCHES, SOPHE 2017-18 President. “We are excited to have her at the helm to ensure that health promotion practitioners can apply the latest health education science and innovation, and likewise can enhance future health education research.”
In accepting the appointment, Dr. Roe comments,
“I am deeply honored to have been named the next editor-in-chief of Health Promotion Practice. Since its founding, I have relied on HPP as a practitioner, researcher, professor, and author. I salute the previous chief editors, the editorial boards, the staff, reviewers, and authors who imagined a journal like this and then worked so diligently to make it the well-respected treasure it has become. I pledge to build upon this foundation and look forward to all that is to come.”
Dr. Roe will become the journal’s fourth editor in nearly two decades and will serve through 2022. She will succeed Jesus Ramirez-Valles, PhD, who has been appointed as editor-in -chief of SOPHE’s founding journal Health Education & Behavior.
