The recommendations ensure the organization’s alignment with anti-racism tenets
Washington, DC – June 28, 2022 – The Society for Public Health Education’s (SOPHE) Health Equity & Anti-Racism (HEAR) Task Force released its recommendations for the organization to align itself with the emerging understandings of anti-racism.
The call to this task force was to examine SOPHE through an anti-racism lens as the first step to be an authentic and effective leader, and to develop a set of resources for health promotion and education leaders to use in local and regional anti-racism work. The task force examined four organizational areas within SOPHE: governance, publications, membership and its annual conference.
The result of this work includes a series of recommendations for SOPHE’s Board of Trustees, its publications, membership, scholarships and awards committees to adopt and follow.
“For an organization to be committed to doing anti-racism work, there is an important opportunity to invest inwardly to ensure the organizational structure and policies themselves are anti-racist,” said SOPHE’s President, Amy Thompson, PhD, CHES®.
Additionally, the culmination of the Health Equity & Anti-Racism Task Force charge ended with a toolkit with a variety of resources for health education and promotion practitioners and academia to use. The resources include a lesson plan, articles, guides, videos, podcasts and books.
