Active Learning Strategies for Teaching Public Health to First Generation College Students
Participants will learn how to address the learning needs of first-generation college students in the classroom while engaging in active learning techniques. These practices have been used to facilitate learning at an institution with a high percentage of first-generation college students (over 60%). The webinar will include a walkthrough of course design for an undergraduate health policy course. In this course, students apply classroom concepts while exploring how state and federal health policy issues impact local congressional districts of their choice and develop video resources to educate and empower community members. The instructor will share how transparent design and scaffolding of assignments helped to ensure clarity, focus, and engaged learning over the course of the semester, using tools available on most learning management systems. Finally, the instructor will share assessment tools used to obtain student feedback.
