Promoting Civic Health Equity
*Priority given to manuscripts submitted by November 30th, 2025*
Everyone deserves a voice in the systems, issues, and policies that affect their health and wellbeing across the lifespan. Higher levels of civic engagement, in general, and voter participation, in particular, are associated with better public health outcomes. Substantial & compelling evidence suggests that voter participation is associated not only with better self-reported health, but also with higher levels of community well-being.
For 25+ years, Health Promotion Practice has been committed to eliminating health disparities, achieving health equity, addressing social determinants of health, and advancing evidence-based health promotion practice. With this foundational commitment to equity and justice, HPP invites you to submit a Practice Notes, Resources, Frameworks, & Perspectives, Career Development, or Research Briefs manuscript for this special call focused on promoting civic health equity. We envision civic health equity as all people having a fair and just opportunity to participate in their communities and to have a voice in the systems that shape their lives. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Civic health as a public health imperative
- Practices, policies, and systems that promote civic engagement
- Building community power to address the impacts of historical disinvestment and structural racism on civic participation
- Strategies to incorporate civic health education into K-12 and university curricula
- Initiatives that integrate nonpartisan voter registration into healthcare and public health settings
- Policy advocacy initiatives that prioritize populations who have been historically excluded from or experienced barriers to voting
- Advocating for policies that make voting safer, easier, more accessible, and inclusive
